Day 17 – Let Your Life Be a Blessing to Others

Day 17 - Let Your Life Be a Blessing to Others

“When you are focused on being a blessing, God makes sure that you are always blessed in abundance.” Joel Osteen

Have you ever experienced a moment in your life where you received and unexpected blessing from another person?

Maybe it was someone who mowed your lawns for you, or took your garbage bins out one night, or a neighbour who popped by with a gift of some home-cooked food knowing that you were in need of some extra support.

When we open our hearts to serve and bless others something quite transformational happens. We open up a channel to our higher-self that seems to transcend the boundaries of our ego. We awaken the spirit of unconditional love, within whose presence we lay the foundation for miracles to take place.

Our lives were gifted to us so that we could connect with the higher-essence of who we really are, discover our most innate gifts and use our talents to make a difference in people’s lives. Best of all the more people we are open and willing to serve, the greater the rewards that we can expect to experience.

Giving and receiving form complimentary roles in this magical cycle of self-evolution and growth.

Just as the moon and tides may move the sea to retreat, so to they also create the space and the environment for the water to flow in. Our role in this magical interplay of the elements is simply to be a part of the process, not resisting, or holding back. But allowing our heart to navigate us forward to where we need to be in each moment, and what we need to be doing.

When Mother Teresa of Calcutta founded the Missionaries of Charity I doubt she would have been aware of the profound impact that her life of service would have on the people around her, the homeless on the streets of Calcutta, or the many organisations and individuals around the world who would later become financial beneficiaries to her cause.

When we operate from the purity of our heart without force, greed or ego, we awaken the heart of greatness within ourselves. We open the door to the true spirit that we are, and lay the framework for creating, shaping and enjoying a life of significance. Best of all you don’t have to be a saint to be a blessing in the world. One loving comment of appreciation, one smile, one item of food purchased for those in need, or even a phone call to check-in on a close friend is all it takes to reconnect with our true spirit and become a symbol of grace and transformation in our world.

The Practice

The 2001 Hollywood drama ‘Pay it Forward’ set the framework for a movement that to this day continues to bless people around the world with unconditional random acts of kindness.

So today while your mission simple, it may not be easy, for I am going to ask you to find a way to randomly bless someone in your life through the simple act of kindness. Some examples could be:

  1. Giving some money at your local cafe to pay for the coffees of the next few people

  2. Cooking a nice dish for one of your neighbours

  3. Giving a friend a phone call simply to find out how they are

  4. Giving a hand as a volunteer at one of your local charities, nursing homes or schools

  5. Greeting the each person you meet on your morning walk with a smile and ‘hello’

The key to this practice however should be:

  1. To bless without any expectation of receiving in return

  2. To bless with gratitude and an open heart

  3. To simply pay attention with open awareness to how you feel after the blessing

  4. To honour the practice and commit to embracing it in your life from now on

So start getting creative and bless someone in your life today.

The Affirmation

I am a blessing in my world.

The Question

What is loving seeking to draw out of me now?

The Thought

The more people we are open and willing to serve, the greater the rewards we can expect to experience in our lives.
